What Do the IP Code Numbers Mean?

Interpreting the “X” Designation
If a product isn’t tested for one of the two categories, an “X” is marked in place of the numerical value. For example, an IPX7 rating refers to a device that is not rated for protection against solid objects, but is officially rated for protection against the effects of water immersion between 15cm to 1m for 30 minutes.
The First Digit: Solid Object & Dust Protection
The first numerical digit indicates the sealing level against solid bodies and dust. These protection levels range from 0 to 6.
- 0-4: Protects against large solid objects (like hands or fingers) down to small tools and wires.
- 5: Dust-protected (limited ingress permitted, but won’t interfere with operation).
- 6: Dust-tight. At the highest rating, the device is completely sealed against all dust for two to eight hours.
The Second Digit: Liquid & Water Protection
The second numerical digit deals with moisture and liquid ingress, with protection levels ranging from 0 through 8.
- 0: No protection.
- 1-4: Protects against dripping, spraying, or splashing water.
- 5-6: Protects against low-pressure to high-pressure water jets.
- 7-8: Protects against continuous immersion in water under pressure for long periods.
