Sockets for Nurse Call Systems
ISL was tasked with reverse engineering and manufacturing two different sockets that are used in proprietary nurse call systems around the world.
Overview
ISL was approached by a current customer, in the healthcare industry, that needed help because two particular ¼” multi-purpose sockets had gone obsolete by the original manufacturers. The customer had been using the incumbent sockets in their proprietary Nurse Call Systems for years. The incumbent sockets were a Curbell 8 pin socket with switch and a Dukane 17 pin socket.
Challenge
Since the customer had been using the incumbent sockets for so long, it was crucial that ISL came up with a drop-in replacement. These particular sockets both incorporate a switch for making and breaking a circuit. The multiple contacts on the sockets allow the Nurse Call Systems to monitor the many functions of a hospital bed.
Solution
ISL reverse engineered and tooled for all components necessary to manufacture both sockets. The tooling was needed to ensure that the sockets were a direct drop-in replacement, which meant that they met the form, fit, and function of the obsoleted sockets.
Conclusion
ISL reverse engineered and tooled two obsolete sockets, the Curbell 8 pin and Dukane 17 pin, into direct drop in replacements that matched the original form, fit, and function. By preserving the built in switch and multi contact design of each socket, ISL ensured the customer's Nurse Call Systems continued to accurately monitor every function of the hospital bed without any redesign. This reverse engineering effort let the customer keep a proven, long standing product in the field despite the original components going out of production. The project shows how ISL can revive obsolete parts to protect healthcare products that hospitals depend on every day.
